Collection: Japanese Ceremonial Silk Lumbar Pillow Covers

Japanese ceremonial silk lumbar pillow covers, reimagined from obi.

Renaras designs and reimagines existing Japanese ceremonial silk into contemporary pieces for daily life — this is our mottainai: the bringing of new imagination into a living tradition. Woven once for moments of significance, brought into the home with the same care that went into its making.

Each pillow cover in this collection is cut from a Japanese ceremonial silk obi — woven for weddings, tea ceremonies, and formal occasions, and finished at our Amsterdam atelier with envelope pocket closure and no metal touching the visible silk. The obi determines the composition; the cut follows the silk, not the reverse. Brocaded florals, cranes, gold and silver thread, and patterns built into the weave itself: each cover carries the original textile's design language into a sofa, an armchair, the foot of a bed. For how each piece sits within a considered interior, see our guide to wabi-sabi interior design.

Each cover is singular. Once the original silk is cut, the composition does not return. For care and storage, see our guide to caring for Japanese ceremonial silk.

One silk. One story. One piece. Never repeated.
