Against a deep lacquer-black silk ground, the Kikkō (亀甲) — the tortoiseshell hexagon, one of Japan's oldest and most revered auspicious symbols, representing longevity, resilience, and the protection of the noble house — is rendered in a heavy, raised metallic gold grid of exceptional structural presence. At each hexagonal centre, Kiri (桐) Paulownia crests and Kiku (菊) Imperial Chrysanthemums alternate in vibrant vermilion, leaf green, and burnished gold — the twin symbols of the Japanese Empress and the Imperial throne, woven together into a single composition of ceremonial authority.

The Kikkō pattern has appeared on the armour, robes, and ceremonial objects of Japanese nobility for over a millennium. Its geometric perfection — the hexagon being the most structurally efficient form in nature — made it the symbol of a dynasty built to endure. In the Nishijin weaving tradition, the raised brocade technique used here requires individual metallic threads to be placed with precision across an interlocking hexagonal grid, a feat of Jacquard engineering that cannot be replicated by contemporary mass production.
