Collection: Japanese Silk Fukusa
Japanese silk fukusa, reimagined for objects worth honouring.
Renaras designs and reimagines existing Japanese silk into contemporary pieces for daily life — this is our mottainai: the bringing of new imagination into a living tradition. Where the furoshiki carries, the fukusa covers. It is the gift cloth laid over a present before it is given, the final layer between a hand and the thing being honoured — a quiet, formal act of presentation that the Japanese tradition has held to for centuries.
Each fukusa in this collection is finished at our Amsterdam atelier from Japanese silk woven for occasions of significance. Crane, pine, plum, tortoise, wave, fan — the motifs that recur on fukusa are not decorative. They carry meaning: long life, endurance, returning seasons, fortune. Laid over a gift before it is passed across a table, draped on a shelf, or framed as a single panel of textile art, a fukusa makes ceremony of an ordinary moment.
Each cloth is singular. Once the silk is cut, the composition does not return.
One silk. One story. One cloth. Never repeated.
