Woven once for moments of significance, brought into the home with the same care that went into its making.
Each pillow cover in this collection is cut from a Japanese ceremonial silk obi — woven for weddings, tea ceremonies, and formal occasions, and finished at our Amsterdam atelier with envelope pocket closure and no metal touching the visible silk. The obi determines the composition; the cut follows the silk, not the reverse. Brocaded florals, cranes, gold and silver thread, and patterns built into the weave itself: each cover carries the original textile's design language into a sofa, an armchair, the foot of a bed. For how each piece sits within a considered interior, see our guide to wabi-sabi interior design.
Each cover is singular. Once the original silk is cut, the composition does not return. For care and storage, see our guide to caring for Japanese ceremonial silk.
On what a single obi cushion carries into a room, read The Pillow That Remembers.
One silk. One story. One piece. Never repeated.
Questions we are asked
What is a Japanese ceremonial silk lumbar pillow cover?
A pillow cover cut from a single obi, the sash woven for weddings, tea ceremonies and formal occasions, and finished at the Renaras atelier in Amsterdam with an envelope pocket closure so that no metal touches the visible silk.
What sizes are the lumbar pillow covers?
The standard cover is 50 × 31 cm; a number of designs are also made in 36 × 31 cm. Each listing records its exact dimensions.
Is an insert included?
No. Covers are supplied without an insert, so a client can choose the fill. A 50 × 30 cm feather or down insert suits the standard size.
How is the silk cared for?
Spot clean only, and keep the piece out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of colour. These are ceremonial silks, not washable textiles.
Is each cover unrepeatable?
Yes. Each cover is cut from one obi, and once the silk is cut the composition does not return. Each piece arrives with its Renaras passport.
