Against a smooth, luminous champagne silk ground — vast and uninterrupted — a single Maru-mon (丸紋), a large ceremonial circular crest, frames the Ho-o (鳳凰), the Japanese phoenix, in gold and silver thread of varying texture and weight. Around the bird, the lush leaves of the Kiri (桐), the Paulownia tree — the only tree in which the phoenix is said to alight — are embroidered in layered gold, completing a composition of breathtaking negative space and singular symbolic authority.
