The Seigaiha (青海波) — the blue ocean wave, one of the oldest and most enduring patterns in the entire Japanese decorative canon, traced to the Tang dynasty and perfected across twelve centuries of continuous Nishijin refinement — sweeps across the surface in undulating currents of sage green, burnished rust, and liquid gold. The rich, ribbed texture of the weave creates a light-catching topography that no photograph can fully render: the silk moves differently in morning light, in candlelight, in the diffused grey of a northern European afternoon. It is, in this sense, not one object but many.

The Seigaiha carries the symbolic weight of the ocean itself — surging, resilient, boundless in its fortune. In Japanese imperial court culture, it appeared on the robes of the highest ceremonial occasions. In the Nishijin Obi tradition, it demanded the most technically accomplished weavers working at the fullest extent of their craft.
