Collection: Japanese Ceremonial Silk Table Runners

Japanese ceremonial silk table runners, reimagined from obi.

Renaras designs and reimagines existing Japanese ceremonial silk into contemporary pieces for daily life — this is our mottainai: the bringing of new imagination into a living tradition. Woven once for moments of significance, brought into the home with the same care that went into its making.

Each runner in this collection is cut from a Japanese ceremonial silk obi — woven for weddings, tea ceremonies, and formal occasions, and finished at our Amsterdam atelier into a single textile for the centre of a table. Laid through the length of a dining table, console or end-of-bed bench, the runner becomes the soft axis of the room — a single stroke of pattern and light that asks for very little beside it. Styled with candles, fine glassware, or left almost bare, these runners belong on tables set for long dinners, intimate tea services, and gallery-length banquets. For ideas on how to work with each piece, see our Japanese table runner styling ideas.

Each runner is singular. Once the original silk is cut, the composition does not return. Those drawn to the same silks at the wall will find what they are looking for in our Japanese ceremonial silk wall art.

One silk. One story. One piece. Never repeated.
