At Renaras we preserve the most auspicious gallery-level Japanese ceremonial silk — silk that would otherwise remain folded and unseen — and bring it into rooms where it can be enjoyed, daily, in the light it was made for. This is our mottainai: the bringing of new imagination into a living tradition. Wall tapestries at Renaras are cut from a single Japanese ceremonial silk obi — woven for weddings, tea ceremonies, and formal processions — and transformed at our Amsterdam atelier into singular vertical compositions for the contemporary interior.

The cut is led entirely by the textile: where the motif resolves, how the pattern moves, how metallic threads catch the light once installed. No two panels share the same passage of cloth; the obi that gives a tapestry its composition no longer exists in that form. Each piece hangs from handmade hardwood bars at the top and bottom — finished with a leather hanging cord — so the silk falls in a clean, architectural line without frames or glass, the textile allowed to breathe. Dimensions vary by obi: from tall, narrow panels that anchor an entrance wall to long formats suited to stairwells, corridors, lobbies and suites.
