Persimmon. Two vessels. Gold dust. Painted in the spirit of the folk atelier.

The Artisan's Harmony is mounted from a hand-painted Japanese ceremonial silk obi of light, organic surface texture — the particular material quality associated with the Mingei (民芸) tradition, the Japanese folk-art movement founded in the 1920s by philosopher Yanagi Sōetsu. The composition is a Kabin (花瓶) still life: two vessels rendered with the direct, unhurried confidence of the folk atelier — a fluid azure glass vase and a faceted earthen pot, each described in the spare lines of a hand that has drawn this subject many times. Between and around them, a dusting of Sunago (砂子) gold leaf — the technique of scattering gold particles across a ground to create atmospheric luminosity — gives the composition a quiet richness that does not announce itself. The whole is framed by a bold Kaki-iro (柿色) persimmon border.

At the atelier we cut a length from the painted obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. The piece is mounted between handmade hardwood bars at the top and bottom, finished with a leather hanging cord, and supplied ready to hang. The bars are part of the work, not a separate purchase. The painted surface and the scattered Sunago are preserved as they were applied in Japan.

The Artisan's Harmony is the most domestically versatile piece in the collection. The Kaki-iro persimmon ground and azure vase palette sit naturally in a kitchen, a creative workspace, a hallway, the sitting room of a boutique guest house, or any space that benefits from warmth and the particular quality of something made by a person rather than produced by a process. It pairs with terracotta, warm linen, raw wood, unglazed ceramics.

Renaras: existing Japanese ceremonial silk, preserved at gallery scale and brought into rooms where it can be seen.

Each tapestry arrives with its own passport from the atelier — a handmade record of the obi's first life, the composition that was cut from it, the lining and mounting it received, signed and dated in Amsterdam.

Care

Spot clean only — these are ceremonial silks, not washable textiles. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of colour. The envelope pocket closure requires no zip or metal clasp touching the silk: this is intentional. Mottainai — nothing wasted, nothing forced.
