The spirit of the wisteria flower. Caught at the moment of the dance.
The Spirit of Wisteria is a Japanese Nihon Ningyō doll depicting the Fujimusume — the Wisteria Maiden, one of the most enduring figures in the Japanese doll tradition. Her origins lie in the classical Kabuki dance piece of the same name, first performed in 1826 and continuously staged in the centuries since. In the dance, the maiden is the spirit of the wisteria flower — a figure of elegance and longing, whose cascading sleeves and characteristic black lacquer hat draped with wisteria blossoms have become some of the most recognisable imagery in Japanese ceremonial and theatrical art.
This piece was created by the doll maker Aiho, whose signed works are distinguished by their technical precision in the Gofun finish — the smooth, luminous surface achieved by applying ground oyster shell paste — and by the careful treatment of the silk brocade garments, which use fabric of formal quality consistent with the garments depicted in ceremonial portraiture. The figure is shown mid-movement, holding the traditional wisteria-draped hat at the shoulder, her downward gaze characteristic of the Nihon Buyo classical dance idiom. The kimono is woven with auspicious floral motifs in persimmon and gold; the under-collar and layered hem carry the considered depth of detail associated with devoted artisan production.
The Spirit of Wisteria belongs in a private collection of Japanese figurative work, or in a considered interior where a single figurative object is the room's quiet anchor. Display under glass or in a vitrine, away from direct sunlight, so that the Gofun finish and the silk garments retain their character indefinitely.

Care
Care
Spot clean only — these are ceremonial silks, not washable textiles. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of colour. The envelope pocket closure requires no zip or metal clasp touching the silk: this is intentional. Mottainai — nothing wasted, nothing forced.
