The Renaras furoshiki and fukusa gift wrapping service wraps a gift in Japanese cloth rather than paper, tied by hand at our atelier in Amsterdam and sent to any address in Europe.

A furoshiki is a square of cloth that has wrapped, carried and presented things in Japan for centuries. A fukusa is the finer silk cloth laid over a gift when it is offered formally. Both are made to be untied rather than torn, so the wrapping travels with the gift and stays useful long after the occasion. Nothing is thrown away. This is mottainai, the Japanese reluctance to waste what still has worth, and it is the thought behind everything we make.

How the service works

Acquire the service here, on its own or together with a Renaras object. Within one working day we write to you to discuss the gift, the occasion and the cloth that suits both. You choose from our cotton furoshiki, listed separately from €16, or ask us to suggest one; for a formal presentation we can wrap in fukusa. We then fold and tie the piece by hand in the knot the occasion calls for and send it to you, or directly to the recipient, with a small card showing how to untie the cloth and use it again.

The service is for Renaras objects and for gifts of your own. A gift of your own can be sent to the atelier or brought by appointment; we wrap it and send it on.

Price

€15 per piece. The cloth is listed separately and stays with the recipient. Wrapping is complimentary on any Renaras order over €100.

Questions

What is the difference between furoshiki and fukusa wrapping?

Furoshiki is knotted around the gift and doubles as a carrier; it suits most occasions and almost any shape, from a book to a bottle. Fukusa is draped over the gift rather than tied and belongs to formal exchange, where the cloth is lifted away as the gift is presented.

Is the cloth included?

No. We choose the cloth with you and list it separately, from €16, so that it is yours to keep or the recipient's to reuse.

Can the recipient reuse the cloth?

Yes. That is the point of it. The card we include shows how to untie the knot and a few ways to use the cloth again, from carrying a bottle to wrapping the next gift.

Do you send wrapped gifts directly to the recipient?

Yes. Give us the address when we write to you and we send the wrapped gift there. Shipping within Europe usually takes three to five working days.

How long does wrapping take?

We wrap within two working days of our conversation, sooner when an occasion is close. Tell us the date and we plan around it.

Do you wrap for corporate gifting or events?

Yes. Use the enquiry form above with the quantity, the occasion and a delivery date, and we will quote a corporate order, wrapped as one batch and sent as a single shipment or individually to each recipient.

Do you run wrapping courses for companies?

Yes. We run furoshiki wrapping courses for companies, for team days and client events, at your offices or at our atelier in Amsterdam. Use the enquiry form above with the group size and a date.

Can I learn to wrap this way myself?

Yes, through our sister atelier. Furoshiki Amsterdam teaches the technique in Amsterdam and at markets across the Netherlands. Visit furoshiki.amsterdam.

Shipping

Free shipping across Europe. Delivered within 3–5 business days. International shipping available — contact us for rates. All pieces are wrapped individually in tissue and despatched in a rigid, protective box.

Returns

Returns accepted within 14 days of receipt, provided the piece is returned in its original condition. As every textile is singular and unrepeatable, we ask that pieces are handled with care. Please contact us before returning. Read the full returns policy.

Care

Spot clean only — these are ceremonial silks, not washable textiles. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of colour. The envelope pocket closure requires no zip or metal clasp touching the silk: this is intentional. Mottainai — nothing wasted, nothing forced.
