Japanese Ceremonial Silk Wall Tapestry – The Eternal Pine, Matsu Pine in Cream and Teal

Cream silk. One pine branch. The stillness of a winter forest on the wall.

The Eternal Pine is mounted from a hand-painted Japanese ceremonial silk obi of quiet organic presence. The ground is Kinari (生成り) cream — the warm undyed tone of natural fibre, the colour of aged paper and winter light, a ground that recedes completely to allow the composition placed upon it to breathe. Against this still ground, Matsu (松) — the Japanese pine — has been rendered in teal blue, coffee brown, and burnt orange: the colours of the pine in the hour before dusk, when the light turns the bark warm and the needles cool simultaneously. In the Japanese tradition the Matsu signifies longevity, resilience, and the dignity of something that endures not by force but by nature. Here it is rendered with the spare directness of a Zen ink painting: a single branch, placed with intention, the cream ground around it as active as the motif itself.

At the atelier we cut a length from the painted obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. The piece is mounted between handmade hardwood bars at the top and bottom, finished with a leather hanging cord, and supplied ready to hang. The bars are part of the work, not a separate purchase. The painted surface is preserved as it was made in Japan.

The Eternal Pine is the most tonally versatile piece in the collection. The cream and teal palette pairs with every neutral — white plaster, warm grey, pale oak, undyed linen, raw stone — and introduces the particular quality of Japanese botanical restraint into spaces that benefit from something considered. A bedroom, a reading corner, a hallway, the meditation room of a wellness hotel, the corridor of a serviced apartment finished in calm materials.

Each tapestry arrives with its own passport from the atelier — a handmade record of the obi's first life, the composition that was cut from it, the lining and mounting it received, signed and dated in Amsterdam.
