Burgundy the colour of ancient ink. Woven into your table, once.
The Enji-Shima is a vintage Japanese silk table runner handcrafted by Renaras from an authentic pure silk textile of precise linear structure. The foundation is dyed in Enji-iro (臙脂色) — the deep burgundy-crimson historically produced from safflower dye in the workshops of Edo-period Japan, a colour that appears in the robes of Buddhist monks, the lacquerwork of ceremonial objects, and the most restrained end of the Japanese aristocratic palette. It is not red. It is not purple. It is the colour that sits between them with complete authority, and on silk it has a warmth and depth that no synthetic equivalent approaches. Across this ground, horizontal Shima (縞) relief stripes are precision-woven in contrasting ivory silk thread — the Shima stripe being one of the oldest and most enduring structural motifs in Japanese textile design, associated since the Edo period with the merchant class who adopted it as a mark of refined taste within the constraints imposed upon them by sumptuary law. Each stripe is raised from the surface in subtle relief, creating a tactile rhythm that reads as architectural from across the room and reveals its textile origins only on close touch.
Shima stripe textiles occupy a unique position in the Japanese weaving canon: they are the most structurally disciplined of all Japanese patterns, relying entirely on the precision of thread tension and spacing for their effect. A single inconsistency in warp tension produces a visible irregularity across the entire length of the textile. The ivory relief stripes of the Enji-Shima are the work of a loom set to tolerances that contemporary mass production does not attempt. The result is a surface that is simultaneously the simplest and the most demanding piece in the Table Couture collection — minimalist in appearance, maximalist in craft.
On a dining table, a console, or a sideboard, the Enji-Shima is the runner for interiors that already know what they are. The burgundy Enji-iro ground reads as the most sophisticated neutral in the collection — warm enough to sit with raw oak and undyed linen, dark enough to anchor white marble and pale stone, and structured enough to hold its own in a room of considered objects. It does not compete. It completes.
