Each Renaras piece begins as a Japanese ceremonial silk — an obi tied for a wedding, a furisode kept through generations. In the Amsterdam atelier the silk is cut and finished by hand into wall tapestries, table textiles and pillows. Once a silk is transformed, it cannot be made again.

About the Atelier

At our atelier on Overschiestraat in Amsterdam, we work exclusively with Japanese ceremonial silk — obis and kimono textiles woven for ceremony, occasion, and household ritual. Each textile arrives with a history. We design and finish every piece in-house, transforming the silk into wall tapestries, lumbar pillows, table runners, table placemats, framed textile panels, knot bags, and ties.

Our practice is grounded in mottainai — the bringing of new imagination into a living tradition. Every Renaras piece is unrepeatable. Once a silk has been transformed, it cannot be made again.

Every finished piece is accompanied by a Renaras passport — a small handmade record of the silk’s first life and its transformation, signed and dated in Amsterdam.
