Oval Serving Plates — Hagi Ware by Seigan Yamane, Set of Two

This pair of oval serving plates is Hagi ware (萩焼) by Japanese potter Seigan Yamane (山根清玩) — each glazed in deep cobalt that pools from a pale blue centre to an indigo rim, finished with an iron-brown edge. Shōwa period; 31 × 16 × 3.5 cm each.

The glaze breaks unevenly across each surface — lighter where it thins over the rise of the well, darker in the recesses. The rims are irregular and hand-formed, the feet left bare-bodied, and both reverses carry the potter's impressed seal. No two firings settle the glaze identically, so the two plates read as a matched pair rather than duplicates.

Renaras, an Amsterdam atelier known for its work with Japanese ceremonial silk, selects Hagi ware directly from established Japanese artisans. Plates of this length are made for the shared middle of the table — fish, seasonal vegetables, whatever is meant to be passed rather than portioned.
