Ao-Hagi Blue Serving Bowl — Hagi Ware by Seigan Yamane

This ao-hagi (青萩) serving bowl is contemporary Hagi ware (萩焼) by Seigan Yamane (山根清玩) of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan — 18 cm across, made in the early 21st century and glazed in the deep mineral blue that gives the ao-hagi tradition its name.

The glaze holds its colour in layers: a night-blue ground, a mist of pale blue breaking across the well like light moving under water, the rim darkening to iron. A small pouring lip is drawn from the edge — a quiet gesture that makes the bowl as at home serving as it is standing alone. Underneath, the coarse unglazed foot ring shows the raw Hagi clay, left bare as the tradition asks.

Renaras, an Amsterdam atelier known for its work with Japanese ceremonial silk, selects Hagi ware directly from established Japanese artisans. A bowl like this asks to be used — fruit, a shared course, water for a single stem — and the glaze rewards the habit.
