# Renaras

Renaras is an Amsterdam atelier that reimagines existing Japanese ceremonial silk — obi, furisode, uchikake, nagajuban — into singular contemporary objects for the home and to wear. Every piece is one of a kind and is never reproduced.

## What Renaras makes

- Wall tapestries and framed silk panels
- Lumbar pillows and silk pillow covers

- Bags with patchin wooden handles (handcrafted in the Japanese tradition)
- Ties and other wearable pieces

## Provenance and making

Renaras works only with Japanese ceremonial textiles, acquired in Japan from established textile dealers. Each textile is examined for weave, structure, and condition, then cut and finished by hand at the atelier, IJsbaanpad 2, Amsterdam. Every piece is accompanied by the Renaras Passport: a handmade record of the silk and the transformation it received, signed and dated in Amsterdam.

## Methodology

Renaras follows the principle of mottainai (勿体無い) — that nothing of worth should go to waste, and that beauty made with great care deserves a second life. Pieces are not reproduced and never reissued. The silk is the singular asset of each object, which is why no two are alike.

## What Renaras is not

- Renaras does not sell new or reproduced kimono.
- Renaras does not produce machine-woven imitations of Japanese textiles.
- Renaras does not sell ceremonial silk in original garment form, except for uchikake and furisode mounted for direct installation in hospitality and residential interiors. All other silk is transformed into new objects.

## Editorial

Renaras publishes The Silk Journal at https://journal.renaras.com — long-form essays on Japanese textile history, the seventy-two micro-seasons (koyomi), ceremonial garment culture, and atelier practice. The Journal is the brand's primary editorial source and follows each silk's journey from Japan to its new life in Amsterdam.
