The only bijin-ga in the Renaras collection; one exists. Japanese ceremonial silk, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam; ships worldwide.

The Kin-michi Bijin is mounted from a Japanese ceremonial silk obi woven in Tsuzure-ori (綴れ織り) — the most labour-intensive and pictorially precise of all Nishijin weave constructions, in which each colour area is built individually by a weaver working the weft thread back and forth across only the portion of the warp it belongs to, producing a textile structurally closer to a European tapestry than to conventional silk weaving, and that achieves a resolution and tonal depth no other loom technique can match. The ground is deep Kinran gold and rusted orange, worked with a painterly atmospheric dye effect that reads like firelight, or the particular quality of late afternoon sun on a dusty road — the ground is not flat but in motion, the colours shifting and bleeding into one another. Against this ground three Bijin-ga (美人画) court figures move in procession, each carrying a parasol, their robes rendered in the muted green and brown that Japanese court painters used to place figures in time. The Tsuzure construction means each figure is built thread by thread with the patience of a painter rather than the speed of a weaver — the robes, the parasols, the hands, the angle of each head are individual decisions at the loom.

The Renaras atelier cut a length from the Tsuzure obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. The ground is finely textured, the horizontal weave structure creating a luminous rhythm across the surface so that the blue shifts between depth and brightness as the light changes. Against it stands a single Hyōtan (瓢箪) — the double-gourd vessel, rendered in burnished gold — with hand-painted Tsubaki (椿) camellia blossoms adorning its body. The Hyōtan is one of the oldest auspicious symbols in the Japanese visual vocabulary: the double-gourd form represents good fortune, prosperity and health, and has appeared on imperial crests, Noh theatre costumes and the mon family emblems of the great feudal lords. The Higanbana — the red spider lily — is the most intensely coloured flower in the Japanese botanical vocabulary and one of the most culturally weighted: it blooms at the autumn equinox, lining the edges of rice paddies and the borders of cemeteries, a flower that appears at the boundary between seasons and between worlds. The Bokashi gradient that moves across the petals is one of the most technically demanding passages in Yuzen silk painting, requiring the artist to work wet-into-wet across multiple petals simultaneously. Each petal is singular. The cluster as a whole is unrepeatable.

The Renaras atelier cut a length from the painted obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. The silk is finely ribbed, the texture catching and releasing light along the length of each thread so that the purple field is never flat but always in quiet movement. The ground is kinran (金襴): gold thread carried through the body of the silk rather than laid on its surface, present at different depths of the weave, shifting with the room's light as no print or coating can. Four motifs are gathered for a single occasion of consequence — oshidori (鴛鴦), mandarin ducks, the emblem of enduring love and the only paired-bird motif in the Renaras collection; goshoguruma (御所車), the imperial carriage, mark of the highest aristocracy; tsuru (鶴), cranes in flight, for longevity; matsu (松), pine, for constancy. The composition is structured in the E-Gasane (絵重ね) tradition: intimate woven vignettes arranged across the obi's length like a narrative scroll. Court figures in a moment of private rendezvous, Tsuru (鶴) cranes in flight, Sakura (桜) in full bloom — each rendered in soft pastels against the gold, with Shishu (刺繍) silk embroidery accents adding surface depth. The Tsuru is Japan's symbol of longevity and distinction; its presence alongside the court figures is not decorative. This obi was made to be worn at an occasion of consequence and carries that weight openly. The pale gold and silver ground shifts between silver-white, warm gold, and the quality of late afternoon light depending on how the room's light falls — the piece is never the same across the hours of a day.

The Renaras atelier cut a length from the obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth to support the metallic and embroidered weight. Holding foil thread this fine demands an unbroken discipline of tension across hundreds of passes. The foundation is Koma Haniwa — a base meticulously prepared with real lacquer and applied gold leaf, layer upon layer, until the ground itself glows with an internal depth no dye or print can replicate. Against it, the Japanese pine — Matsu (松) — is rendered in hand-painted silk, one brushstroke at a time. Each needle of each branch is individually placed. Each cloud of evergreen is a separate act of sustained, patient artisanship.

The Matsu is among the most revered symbols in the entire Japanese ceremonial tradition. Enduring through all four seasons, unchanged by frost or summer, the pine represents longevity, constancy, and the deepest form of peace — midori for a thousand years, as the ancient verse has it. To wear the Taikan is to wear that wish made visible: a promise of permanence given material form in silk, lacquer, and gold. At 187 cm in total length, the Taikan drapes with the weight and authority of a garment designed for the most significant occasion of a life. The construction — lacquered Haniwa base, hand-painted pine, applied gold leaf, Koma needle embroidery — represents a convergence of Japanese craft disciplines that required weeks of a master artisan's undivided attention.

The Taikan is equally powerful worn and displayed. The ground moves in a continuous bokashi (暈し) ombré gradient: imperial pink at the shoulder, deepening through rose and magenta, settling into a regal purple at the hem. This is not a printed transition. It is a woven one, achieved through the progressive substitution of thread colours across the full length of the Jacquard loom — a feat that adds weeks to the production of a garment already requiring months.

The Ho-o (鳳凰) — the Japanese phoenix — soars through a garden of Botan peonies, auspicious cloud formations and trailing flora, plumage rendered in gold and silver thread that catches and refracts light with every movement of the cloth. In Japanese mythological tradition the Ho-o appears only in times of peace and prosperity, alighting only on the Kiri paulownia tree, departing when virtue leaves the world. It is the symbol most directly associated with the Empress of Japan; its presence on an Uchikake communicates a singular aspiration — that the wearer inhabits a world worthy of the phoenix's presence.

At 186.5 cm, designed to trail in the nagashi tradition, this Uchikake carries the full ceremonial weight of a garment made for the most significant occasion of a life. The Karaori brocade is heavy, sculptural, and self-illuminating: the gold and silver thread reads differently in natural light, candlelight and gallery lighting. The Celestial Gradient belongs equally on a wearer at a significant occasion and on a wall — the principal suite of a heritage hotel, the entrance of a fine restaurant, the drawing room of a residence in which one object is meant to carry the room.

Renaras: existing Japanese ceremonial silk garments, preserved at gallery scale and brought into rooms where they can be seen.

Each garment arrives with a passport from the atelier — a handmade record of its provenance, its construction, and its presentation, signed and dated in Amsterdam.

Product type

Uchikake — outer ceremonial wedding robe, presented as textile art

Silk source

Japanese ceremonial silk, Karaori (唐織) raised brocade with bokashi (暈し) woven ombré ground; gold and silver metallic thread

Weave / technique

Karaori (唐織) raised brocade with bokashi ombré ground

Construction

Original Japanese Uchikake. Where the classical ningyō stand in formal poses derived from court and theatrical convention, Tanabe-sensei is renowned for the opposite: the capture of a single moment of feeling, the figure suspended in the instant before its next breath. Here, the figure rushes and dances, hair caught in a windswept silhouette that changes from every viewing angle.

The medium is washi (和紙) — the traditional Japanese paper prized for its long fibres and warmth — handled with such expert manipulation that the flat material takes on the weight, drape, and volume of heavy silk brocade. The palette is a masterful gradient of tangerine, ochre and imperial red, grounded by touches of deep indigo. The fibrous textured paper renders the dynamic silhouette in three-dimensional fold and shadow that no static doll achieves. The Wind Dancer transcends the static convention of the classical ningyō: it is figurative sculpture in the contemporary register, made by hand, in paper that behaves as cloth.

From a design perspective, this piece is a textural anchor. In a room dominated by the hard lines of modern architecture, glass, or polished stone, the organic fibrous nature of the sculpture introduces necessary warmth and softness. Its substantial footprint commands attention: it is best displayed on a floating shelf, sideboard, or within a lighted niche where shadows can play across the intricate folds of the paper. In the Japanese chromatic tradition, vermilion is not simply a colour: it is a declaration of vitality, a guardian against misfortune, and the unmistakable signal of an occasion of the highest possible significance.

At the heart of the composition sits the Goshoguruma (御所車) — the Imperial Carriage of the Heian court nobility, rendered in full ceremonial abundance, laden with Botan peonies, Kiku chrysanthemums and auspicious florals that overflow from its wooden wheels in a controlled riot of colour and gold. This motif carries the full weight of the Heian aesthetic: the belief that beauty, abundance, and nobility are inseparable from one another. What elevates the Imperial Procession beyond the merely extraordinary is the Koma-Nui (駒刺繍) embroidery — the same technique used in the garments of the highest-ranking women of the Japanese Imperial household. Thick cords of genuine gold and silver foil are hand-couched directly onto the silk surface, building a three-dimensional metallic relief that transforms the fabric into structural, tactile architecture, luminous in a way that shifts with every movement of the wearer and every change of the light.

At 158 cm with 104.5 cm iconic swing sleeves, the Imperial Procession is designed for the moment it arrives. Worn over a noir ensemble to an opera, a significant gallery opening, or any occasion where the standard dress code is a ceiling rather than a floor — it redefines the room. Mounted against a dark wall in a grand salon, the suite of a heritage hotel, or the principal room of a private collection, the vermilion ground and gold relief create a presence no Western tapestry or painting achieves by the same means. The statement Furisode: requires no explanation, tolerates no competition.

Furisode — long-sleeved formal kimono, presented as textile art

Silk source

Heavyweight pure Japanese ceremonial silk with Koma-Nui (駒刺繍) hand-couched gold and silver foil cord embroidery on Hi-iro (緋色) vermilion ground

Weave / technique

Heavyweight pure silk with Koma-Nui gold and silver foil cord embroidery

Construction

Original Japanese Furisode. Japanese ceremonial silk, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam; ships worldwide.

The Ivory Court is an original Japanese Furisode of singular compositional distinction — a garment that carries, in its embroidery, one of the most quietly remarkable cross-cultural conversations in the collection. The ground is heavy-gauge Rinzu (綸子) Japanese ceremonial silk in creamy ivory, woven with a subtle self-patterned geometric lattice that catches the ambient light of a ballroom or gallery in motion, creating a shimmering halo quality entirely absent from flat-woven silk. A ground of considerable technical sophistication that reads, from a distance, as simply luminous.

The embroidery departs from the classical Japanese botanical vocabulary — no peonies, no wisteria, no pine — and arrives instead at a composition of four-leaf clovers (yotsuba, 四つ葉) scattered among Kiku (菊) Imperial Chrysanthemums. The four-leaf clover on a Japanese Furisode is an absorption of Western botanical symbolism into the Japanese decorative language — a deliberate choice by the original Kyoto artisan to unite two cultural traditions of good fortune into a single garment. In both traditions the meaning is identical: the clover brings rare luck; the Chrysanthemum, the flower of the Japanese Imperial throne, brings longevity and noble grace. Together, on ivory silk, in gold, they constitute a talisman of unusual potency. The clovers and chrysanthemums are worked in heavy satin stitches in vibrant emerald, vermilion, and imperial orange, accented with hand-couched gold bullion — embroidery that reads as illuminated manuscript at close range and as woven cloth from across the room.

The Ivory Court is the most versatile formal garment in the collection. With 99 cm swing sleeves and the ivory-gold combination that works against every complexion and every interior, it has been considered for a debutante's ball, a white-tie summer gala, a rehearsal dinner, a significant garden party — the Furisode that requires no explanation to the European eye, because ivory and gold are the colours that European occasion dressing has always understood. He is accompanied by the Tsuru (鶴) red-crowned crane, the Gosho-guruma (御所車) Imperial Carriage, and trailing clouds of pine and Botan peony. Against this ground a single Botan (牡丹) — the Japanese tree peony, the flower the imperial court named Hyakka no Ō (百花の王), the king of the hundred flowers — has been painted freehand in the Yuzen tradition with Bokashi (暈し) gradient blending: a technique in which colours are allowed to bleed and dissolve into one another at the edge of each petal, so that the transition from deep magenta at the base of the bloom to translucent blush pink at the outermost petal is not a drawn line but a dissolution. Sage green foliage frames the Botan at the lower edge — painted with the same freehand confidence — anchoring the warmth of the apricot with the one note of cool that keeps the composition from becoming sweet.

The Renaras atelier cut a length from the painted obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. It belongs in a master bedroom, a dressing room, a well-lit bathroom, the suite of a small luxury hotel furnished for intimacy. The palette pairs with dusty rose, warm terracotta, aged brass, natural linen, pale oak, and the particular quality of morning light through linen curtains.
