This is our mottainai: the bringing of new imagination into a living tradition.

Each tapestry is cut from a single obi, and the cut is led by the textile itself: where the motif resolves, how the pattern moves, how metallic thread will catch the light once hung. Japanese ceremonial silk, finished at the Renaras atelier, Amsterdam; ships worldwide.

The Kin-michi Bijin is mounted from a Japanese ceremonial silk obi woven in Tsuzure-ori (綴れ織り) — the most labour-intensive and pictorially precise of all Nishijin weave constructions, in which each colour area is built individually by a weaver working the weft thread back and forth across only the portion of the warp it belongs to, producing a textile structurally closer to a European tapestry than to conventional silk weaving, and that achieves a resolution and tonal depth no other loom technique can match. The ground is deep Kinran gold and rusted orange, worked with a painterly atmospheric dye effect that reads like firelight, or the particular quality of late afternoon sun on a dusty road — the ground is not flat but in motion, the colours shifting and bleeding into one another. Against this ground three Bijin-ga (美人画) court figures move in procession, each carrying a parasol, their robes rendered in the muted green and brown that Japanese court painters used to place figures in time. The Tsuzure construction means each figure is built thread by thread with the patience of a painter rather than the speed of a weaver — the robes, the parasols, the hands, the angle of each head are individual decisions at the loom.

At the atelier we cut a length from the Tsuzure obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. The visible silk is the obi as it was woven.

The Kin-michi Bijin is the most narratively rich piece in the collection — the one that rewards extended looking, that carries a story rather than a motif. The ground is finely textured, the horizontal weave structure creating a luminous rhythm across the surface so that the blue shifts between depth and brightness as the light changes. Against it stands a single Hyōtan (瓢箪) — the double-gourd vessel, rendered in burnished gold — with hand-painted Tsubaki (椿) camellia blossoms adorning its body. The Hyōtan is one of the oldest auspicious symbols in the Japanese visual vocabulary: the double-gourd form represents good fortune, prosperity and health, and has appeared on imperial crests, Noh theatre costumes and the mon family emblems of the great feudal lords. On a ceremonial obi in azure silk it is a statement of concentrated symbolic weight, delivered with complete compositional economy — one object, one ground, one meaning.

At the atelier we cut a length from the obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. At the centre stands the goshoguruma (御所車), the ox-drawn carriage of the imperial court, reserved for the highest nobility. Around it, a full botanical composition: botan (牡丹), peonies in dense, layered bloom; kiku (菊), the chrysanthemum, crest of the Imperial House itself; matsu (松), pine, arching above the carriage in the highest register.

The flowers are not woven but embroidered — built up in fine knotted and looped stitches that give each petal its own surface relief, so the peonies and chrysanthemums rise from the champagne ground and cast their own faint shadows. The Higanbana — the red spider lily — is the most intensely coloured flower in the Japanese botanical vocabulary and one of the most culturally weighted: it blooms at the autumn equinox, lining the edges of rice paddies and the borders of cemeteries, a flower that appears at the boundary between seasons and between worlds. The Bokashi gradient that moves across the petals is one of the most technically demanding passages in Yuzen silk painting, requiring the artist to work wet-into-wet across multiple petals simultaneously. The composition is structured in the E-Gasane (絵重ね) tradition: intimate woven vignettes arranged across the obi's length like a narrative scroll. Court figures in a moment of private rendezvous, Tsuru (鶴) cranes in flight, Sakura (桜) in full bloom — each rendered in soft pastels against the gold, with Shishu (刺繍) silk embroidery accents adding surface depth. The Tsuru is Japan's symbol of longevity and distinction; its presence alongside the court figures is not decorative. This obi was made to be worn at an occasion of consequence and carries that weight openly. The pale gold and silver ground shifts between silver-white, warm gold, and the quality of late afternoon light depending on how the room's light falls — the piece is never the same across the hours of a day.

At the atelier we cut a length from the obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth to support the metallic and embroidered weight. Seiheki is one of the rarest ground colours in the ceremonial obi vocabulary; a Fukuro-obi in full-saturation teal was made for a wearer of exceptional taste. Against this ground the composition is Kachō-ga (花鳥画) — the bird-and-flower genre that is among the oldest and most revered in Japanese pictorial art. The bird is the Goi-Sagi (五位鷺), the night heron — rendered in woven threads of black, cream and olive with the particular stillness that defines the species, neck drawn in, eye fixed, the whole body gathered into a single point of attention. The Goi-Sagi is the only bird in Japanese culture to hold an imperial court rank: the Heian Emperor Daigo, observing how a heron held its position with composure as he approached, granted it the Fifth Court Rank — Go-i — and the name has held for eleven centuries. Through the pale ground runs ultra-fine haku (箔) metallic foil thread, set at intervals so precise that the surface becomes not quite solid and not quite light — it brightens and dims as you move past it, as if the fabric were breathing. Holding foil thread this fine demands an unbroken discipline of tension across hundreds of passes. Against this ground the composition unfolds: a yatai (屋台), the tiered festival float drawn through Japanese matsuri processions, rises from soft botan (牡丹) peonies and mountains brushed in the manner of sumi-e (墨絵) ink painting, receding into mist. Pale pastels, metallic light, a scene that sits between day and night.

At the atelier we cut a length from the obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the reverse with undyed support cloth to carry the dense metallic structure. From across the room it reads as moonlight; at arm's length, as architecture of thread. It belongs in a space of genuine quiet — a meditation room, a principal bedroom, the library of a private residence, the entrance of a wellness hotel, the hall where the first thing a visitor meets asks for a second look, and a third.

Each tapestry arrives with its passport from the atelier — a small handmade record of the silk's first life and its transformation, signed and dated in Amsterdam.

Product type

Wall tapestry

Silk source

Japanese ceremonial silk — Nishijin (西陣) weave with fine haku (箔) metallic foil thread on a pale ground

Weave / technique

Nishijin Kirameki shimmer weave with metallic foil thread

Construction

Cut and redesigned from the original obi; lined with undyed support cloth; mounted on handmade hardwood bars, top and bottom; leather hanging cord supplied. Against this ground a single Botan (牡丹) — the Japanese tree peony, the flower the imperial court named Hyakka no Ō (百花の王), the king of the hundred flowers — has been painted freehand in the Yuzen tradition with Bokashi (暈し) gradient blending: a technique in which colours are allowed to bleed and dissolve into one another at the edge of each petal, so that the transition from deep magenta at the base of the bloom to translucent blush pink at the outermost petal is not a drawn line but a dissolution. Sage green foliage frames the Botan at the lower edge — painted with the same freehand confidence — anchoring the warmth of the apricot with the one note of cool that keeps the composition from becoming sweet.

At the atelier we cut a length from the painted obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the back with undyed support cloth. It belongs in a master bedroom, a dressing room, a well-lit bathroom, the suite of a small luxury hotel furnished for intimacy. The palette pairs with dusty rose, warm terracotta, aged brass, natural linen, pale oak, and the particular quality of morning light through linen curtains. Kon-iro is not simply a shade of blue. It is the colour of the deep ocean before storm, of formal ceremony, of the most controlled and considered Japanese aesthetic: the colour that says everything has been decided with precision and nothing has been left to chance. Against this ground, the obi carries Tegaki (手描き) freehand brush-painted Mukuge (槿) — the white hibiscus — rendered in pearl white silk dye with silver foliage and the faintest breath of coral in the open stamen. Mukuge is the flower of patient continuous bloom, opening every morning of the summer and dropping by evening, and is one of the most revered flowers for the tokonoma alcove precisely because it does not hold on. Against this charged ground, the Karajishi (唐獅子) — the Chinese guardian lion, Japan's most formidable protective motif — has been rendered by a Japanese painter in gold metallic thread amongst cascading Botan (牡丹) peony blooms in vermilion, teal, and gold.
